BioPak is thrilled to announce a landmark partnership with Baskin-Robbins Australia, one of the nation’s most iconic ice cream brands. Together, we’re making strides towards a better future by helping Baskin-Robbins adopt more sustainable packaging solutions and actively contribute to environmental protection and community initiatives.

A Sweet Transition: From Plastic to FSC™ Certified Wood and Paper

This new partnership marks a significant milestone for Baskin-Robbins Australia as the brand moves away from conventional plastic packaging, starting with its famous pink spoon. The traditional plastic spoon will now be replaced with a pink wooden spoon made from responsibly sourced FSC™ certified birchwood

All other plastic and plastic-lined packaging items like milkshake cups and ice cream tubs will now be made from FSC™ certified paper and lined with PLA, bioplastic made from plant-based starches.

This transition will help Baskin-Robbins avoid approximately 604 kgs of fossil fuel plastic per month. This change highlights Baskin-Robbins’ commitment to innovation and sustainability while maintaining the fun and quality that customers love.

Working Towards Sustainable Practices Without Increasing The Costs

Baskin-Robbins is renowned for its focus on innovation, fun, and community, and this partnership is part of their long-term commitment to implementing a range of sustainable business practices.

According to Gaurav Sharma, Head of Commercial at Baskin-Robbins Australia, “Transformation is now embedded in our everyday culture, and BioPak has proven to be a mature, stable, and invaluable partner in our packaging journey.”

Through close collaboration, BioPak and Baskin-Robbins have reduced packaging costs across all items, showing that sustainability doesn’t have to increase costs. By working together and leveraging economies of scale, we’ve laid the foundation for ongoing success in reducing environmental impact.

Beyond Packaging: Making a Difference with the BioPak Give Back Fund

The partnership with BioPak goes beyond packaging, with Baskin-Robbins also contributing to environmental protection and community initiatives through the BioPak Give Back Fund. Since the start of their partnership, Baskin-Robbins has helped plant 22 trees with Rainforest Rescue, donate 493 meals with OzHarvest and positively impact 378 lives with MedEarth.

Compostable Solutions and Waste Management

In addition to adopting more sustainable packaging, Baskin-Robbins is working with Compost Connect to improve their organic waste stream management. This initiative will ensure that both compostable packaging and food waste are collected and turned into nutrient-rich compost, closing the loop and contributing to a circular economy.

Supporting Plastic Bans and Building a Circular Future

This partnership comes at a critical time as single-use plastic bans continue to roll out across Australia, with new restrictions in Western Australia and South Australia that took effect in September.

BioPak CEO Gary Smith notes, “As more companies make a conscious effort to put the planet first, we are seeing a ripple effect across the wider industry. This makes compostable alternatives more accessible and brings us closer to building circular solutions in the food service industry.”
