Plant-Based Alternatives to Plastic Takeaway Containers

When it comes to serving food to consumers on the go, disposable food containers offer a convenient way to present the food both beautifully and hygienically. But this convenience doesn’t have to cost the earth with BioPak food packaging made from plant fibre.

Not all food takeaway containers are created equal! Conventional disposable takeaway containers like polystyrene food packaging and plastic takeaway containers are made from fossil fuels. After a short useful life of approximately 20 minutes, plastic disposable containers usually take hundreds of years to break down into tiny microplastics that pollute the environment.

At BioPak, we manufacture better alternatives to plastic takeaway containers: single-use food containers made from rapidly renewable, responsibly sourced resources like plastic-free sugarcane pulp mixed with other plant fibre, bioplastic and paperboard.

BioCane Takeaway Containers

Our BioCane range is made from reclaimed and rapidly renewable, plastic-free plant fibre and sugarcane pulp – a by-product of the sugar-refining industry. Our new range of takeaway containers are made with no added PFAS, and will be home compostable to Australian standards (AS5810) in September 2024. To be certified compostable and carry the Home Compostable logo, suitable biopolymer materials must undergo a costly and stringent test regime outlined by AS 5810-2010 and be carried out by recognised independent and accredited laboratories. It takes around six months for a new product range obtain a home compost certification.Look our for the compostability logos on the product and, more importantly, the company’s specific licence number. The manufacturer’s licence number can be verified in the Australian Bioplastics Association database. Our range of plant fibre takeaway containers includes bagasse clamshells, plant fibre square and rectangle containers, bagasse bowls, and sauce cups with lids.

BioBoard Takeaway Containers

Our sustainably sourced paperboard range includes paper bowls with lids, french fry packaging, burger boxes, hot dog boxes, paper trays, clamshell packaging, noodle boxes, paper lunch boxes, and sandwich wedges.

This range includes FSC™ certified rectangular paper containers and bowls with a waterproof, greaseproof aqueous coating– perfect for hot, saucy, and greasy food. They are pending certification to AS5810 Australian Standards and NF T51-800 European Standards and can be composted together with food after use. Available in four sizes with matching paper, PLA, PP and PET lids. Consult your local waste provider for disposal options, or visit Compost Connect. Note: only aqueous cups are suitable for home composting. Check with your local council.

Clear Bioplastic Takeaway

Do you prefer clear takeaway containers? Our clear bowls with lids and sauce cups with lids are made from Ingeo™ bioplastic. Present your culinary creations in see-through, certified compostable and disposable containers. Our clear food containers for takeaway should be disposed of responsibly in the nearest commercial compost bin, as they are certified industrially compostable to Australian AS4736 standards. Talk to us about composting in your area.

Switch to sustainable takeaway containers today! We carry an extensive range of eco-friendly disposable food containers to cater to all industries. We are proud to donate 5% of profits from each sale of our food and beverage packaging towards positive change.

Disposable food containers are a convenient, visually appealing and hygienic solution to serve food on-the-go. But this convenience can come at a cost.

Many conventional disposable takeaway containers, like polystyrene food packaging and  plastic takeaway containers, are made from fossil fuels. After a short useful life, these containers can take hundreds of years to break down. Even then, they turn into tiny microplastics that pollute the environment.

At BioPak, we manufacture better alternatives to plastic food containers. We offer single-use food containers for takeaway made from rapidly renewable, responsibly sourced materials like  plant fibre, bioplastic and FSC™ paperboard.

Our range of takeaway containers and lids is either certified industrially (AS4736) or home compostable (AS5810) to Australian Standards. Please consult your local waste provider for disposal options or visit Compost Connect.

Plant Fibre Takeaway Containers

Our plant fibre range is made from reclaimed, rapidly renewable sugarcane pulp – a by-product of the sugar-refining industry. We combine this sugarcane pulp with other plant-based pulp to create ‘plant fibre.’ An extremely versatile, strong and inexpensive solution that looks just like molded cardboard.

BioPak is undertaking a mammoth effort to transform our entire plant fibre range to contain no added PFAS. This will make us the first packaging company in Australia to do so. Excitingly, our plant fibre range with no added PFAS will be home compostable to Australian Standards (AS5810) with some products already holding the certification.

To carry the certified home compostable logo, suitable biopolymer materials must undergo a costly and stringent test regime outlined by AS 5810-2010. This is carried out by recognised independent and accredited laboratories and takes around six months for a new product range to obtain a home compost certification.

Look out for the compost logos on the product and, more importantly, the company’s specific licence number. The manufacturer’s licence number can be verified in the Australian Bioplastics Association database.

What About ‘Eco-Friendly Takeaway Containers’?

Our customers often refer to our takeaway containers as ‘eco-friendly containers.’ However, we choose to steer away from this phrase to prevent greenwashing. Instead, we opt for phrases like certified compostable Containers, which can be substantiated and backed up by certifications.

Give Back Through Takeaway Containers and Lids

Through our Give Back Fund, we donate 5% of profits from all sales of disposable takeaway containers and lids to positive change. BioPak is a B Corp because we believe in profit for purpose, using business as a force for good.
