A world without waste.

Disruptive at our core, BioPak was born from necessity. As a solution to a problem. Our founders, Richard Fine and Gary Smith, recognised the alarming stats: Over 91% of plastics produced aren’t recycled. That leaves the vast majority of plastic accumulating in landfill or the natural environment, which eventually winds up in the ocean.

It became clear the traditional ‘take, make, waste’ model was broken. The world needed compostable food service packaging made from sustainably sourced renewable materials – and fast.

So with a vision to make a real impact, BioPak began in 2006. A time when ‘sustainability’ was still an out-there and far-flung concept. But what began as a grassroots initiative is now a leader in environmentally sustainable packaging manufacturing.

Today, we’re globally recognised and embraced by distributors and customers throughout Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Europe, Singapore and Hong Kong. Each year we continue to lead the way toward a truly circular economy and move closer to our mission of a world without waste.

Partnered with Pickler, an environmental impact calculation software for packaging dedicated to making sustainable decision-making as easy as possible. There are four key impact categories that contribute to overall ‘eco-cost': carbon footprint, impact on biodiversity, impact on human health, and impact on material scarcity.
Leading the charge with next-generation marine degradable solutions. We have launched a range of PHA cups made without any fossil-based materials and certified home compostable (AS5810) and marine biodegradable.

2021 - 2022: Composting Breakthroughs

A time of composting success stories, we saw:

The beginning of our composting initiative, Compost Connect. Since 2021, we’ve helped businesses connect to commercial compost pick up services to divert their food waste and compostable packaging from landfill and compost their organic waste instead.
The introduction of Aqueous – a certified home compostable solution for our coffee cups and lids. A huge step in the right direction.
The introduction of home compostable plant fibre cutlery, coffee cup lids and cold cup lids.
The creation of our award-winning Paper Scoop Spoon Straws for McDonald’s – they’re FSC™ and certified home compostable.
The introduction of our Paper-Wrapped Picnic Range with no plastic sleeves.
Removal of added PFAS in our plant fibre produce and bakery trays.

2019 - 2021: Products Evolving and Expanding

Over this period, we launched BioPak in Singapore and combined forces with Biocup in the United Kingdom. Staying at the forefront of technology, we saw our products evolve and expand. We introduced our:

2018: A Year of ‘Firsts’

An exciting year for BioPak, we saw:

The world’s first waste-free flight operated by Qantas.
The introduction of our FSC™ Certified Paper Straws.
Our first home compostable certification for our range of BioCane Packaging.
The launch of our BioCane Woolworths Bakery Trays.

2012 - 2017

2012 - 2017: Time to Give Back

Once BioPak was well and truly established, it marked a time to start giving back. We:

Started the BioPak “Give Back Fund” to support positive change.
Became B Corp certified in 2017, keeping us accountable to our social and environmental performance.
Launched the first PLA range of cold cups in the Asia Pacific region.
Developed our first Compost Collection Service.

2009 - 2011: Making Headway

A time for growth, we:

Introduced our Bioplastic Lined Coffee Cup and Lid and Sugarcane Fibre Takeaway Containers – an exciting material evolution.
Expanded to New Zealand.
Became Certified Carbon Neutral.

2006

2006: A Solution to a Problem

From humble beginnings. Richard Fine took his skills and knowledge gained from a career in plastic moulding to develop more sustainable solutions.
Richard recognised the current ‘take, make, dispose’ model wasn’t the answer.
Richard Fine partnered with Gary Smith, and together, they disrupted the industry by coming up with compostable food service packaging made from sustainably sourced renewable materials.
