Further Information

Victoria’s single-use plastic ban builds on the ban on lightweight plastic shopping bags that commenced in November 2019. More information on the plastic bag ban is available on the Environment Protection Authority website. Wehave detailed the dates foodservice related packaging items have been banned or are proposed to feature in an upcoming ban.

1 February 2023 (Stage One)

BANNED: Drinking straws, cutlery (including knives, forks, spoons, chopsticks, sporks, splades, food picks and sporks), plates, drink stirrers and sticks, cotton bud sticks, including PLA compostable versions of these items. Expanded polystyrene food service items and drink containers. This includes expanded polystyrene plates, cups, bowls, clam shells and any cover or lid that is also made from expanded polystyrene.

1 January 2019 (Shopping Bag Ban)

BANNED: Single-use lightweight plastic shopping bags under 35 microns, including compostable versions
EXEMPT: Compostable bag accepted if not used to carry goods (bin liner, etc.).
