The future of home compostable cups is here! Thanks to a unique fermentation process similar to making beer, PHA was born. This innovative process uses renewable resources like plant sugars and vegetable oils to create a cup that’s free of fossil fuel-based plastic. These cups are certified home (AS5810 & NF T51-800) and industrially (AS4736 & EN13432) compostable to Australian and European Standards.
PHA resin* is certified marine biodegradable (ASTM D 6691) – so if it accidentally ends up in the sea, it will break down significantly faster than conventional plastic, ensuring that no microplastics persist in the long term.
*While PHA resin is certified marine degradable, manufactured products that don’t have marine applications, like our cups, can’t be certified marine degradable to avoid littering.
So what makes PHA better than other cups on the market? It’s in the composition! Most cups contain some fossil fuel-based plastic; even aqueous cups have a bit. While a little isn’t entirely bad, PHA takes sustainability to a whole new level by not containing any fossil-based plastics at all. This sets a new standard for takeaway cups, combining practicality with caring for the environment, making it a great cup to use where there are single-use plastic bans. If you’re unfamiliar with single-use plastic bans, you can read more here where we list the bans by state. Make the switch today!
