The Singapore Grand Prix forms part of the F1 World Championship, with the inaugural night race taking place each year at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
With the dazzling city skyline as the backdrop, the event is considered an annual standout. But naturally, an event with such momentum equates to a lot of mouths that need feeding – the event crew, Singapore Grand Prix staff, race officials and contractors alone make up a 12,000-strong crowd that helps bring the event to life!
BioPak started supplying the Singapore Grand Prix in 2019 under Duni Song Seng Pte Ltd. In 2022, BioPak partnered directly with the Singapore Grand Prix to deliver sustainable foodservice packaging for their staff cafeterias and VIP suits. We also worked closely with BellyGood, a catering arm of Tung Lok Group which operates the staff cafeteria.
The Challenge: Fuelling Staff, Sustainably
Plastic disposables are a massive problem in Singapore, with many food and beverage companies making the switch to more sustainable alternatives (source).
Not only that, events around the world are on a mission to implement more sustainable practices – and the Singapore F1 is no exception.
The Singapore Grand Prix is working hard to achieve the F1’s goal of net zero by 2030 – reducing their carbon footprint, taking a holistic approach to sustainability and creating a positive impact within the community (source).
A part of that mission involves embracing sustainability within the foodservice sector.
The goal? To reduce single-use plastic by opting for plant-based alternatives.
The Solution: BioPak Meets BellyGood
The Staff Cafeteria at the Singapore Grand Prix is operated by BellyGood – a premium halal-certified catering company for any and every occasion.
At BioPak, we worked with BellyGood and six vendors across the Singapore Grand Prix (including Paul Singapore, Quix, Sens Dining and Senshi) to fuel the race with environmentally conscious choices.
We introduced the following products:
- Plant Fibre 4 Compartment Base + Lid
- Plant Fibre 1000ml Base + Lid
- Paper BioCups
- PLA Cold BioCups
- FSCTM Wooden Cutlery
- Plant Fibre Soup Spoon
BellyGood served their delicious meals in our BioCane Plant Fibre Trays made from sugarcane pulp and other plant-based fibres. It’s an extremely versatile, strong and inexpensive solution that looks just like moulded cardboard.
Rather than fossil-based plastic, sugarcane is a rapidly renewable and widely available resource due to its fast-growing nature and ability to be harvested annually.
It’s important to note, even if BioPak’s plant-based compostable packaging ends up in landfill or incineration (instead of composting facilities, which aren’t widely available in Singapore), it’s still better than plastic alternatives. That’s because traditional plastic packaging is made from energy-intensive, fossil-based resources, whereas compostable packaging is made from rapidly renewable, plant-based resources, so it’s more sustainable from the outset.
Sustainability Results
At the F1 Racing Championship, BellyGood alone served 5000 people per day across three days – all in our compostable packaging that puts the planet first.
That includes 13,200 sets of Plant Fibre 4 Compartment Base with Lid, 6,500 sets of Plant Fibre 1000ml Base with Lid, and 20,000 FSCTM Wooden Cutlery packs. With BellyGood alone, we swapped 59,400 single-use products for plant-based alternatives.
These figures aren’t including the packaging we supplied to other vendors, Paul Singapore, Quix, Sens Dining and Senshi.
