Staying within your weekly budget whilst feeding yourself or a family can be challenging. Perfecto Quality Foods have just launched their new range of budget meal kits at ALDI. These meal kits retail for $14.99 in Australia and are said to feed two people, making it possible to feed a family of four for just $30. Moving towards a sustainable future, packaging was heavily taken into consideration for these new meal kits and BioPak was tasked with designing a base tray that would hold all contents as well as an egg holder. The outer meal kit packaging is made from plastic-free sugarcane pulp, otherwise known as bagasse which is a by-product of the sugarcane refining industry and is certified home compostable.

How BioPak Designed The Perfect Meal Kit Packaging
The Challenge
BioPak’s standard range contains several different shapes and sizes of sugarcane pulp or bagasse containers. This bespoke container was created just for Perfecto Quality Food’s new meal kits and was required to hold a certain amount of weight, withstand moisture from possible condensation of the food and of course, be durable to protect the meals during transportation.
The Solution
The BioPak team tried and tested many different material types and settled on bagasse as the best option for this purpose. After designing different shapes, sizes and thickness of bagasse we were able to achieve a tray that would perform and protect the contents of the meal kits.
Another challenge we faced was creating a custom two egg holder container to go inside the meal kit perfectly without movement that would protect the eggs from breakage during transportation to ALDI stores and with consumers when they transported their groceries home. This was achieved by analysing the dimensions of various egg sizes and creating a snug container that would house the eggs with the least amount of rattle. The egg holder has a hinged lid that friction locks itself closed.

ALDI customers can now find the new super saver meals on shelves in our plastic-free and home compostable trays.
