BioPak and OzHarvest Launch Campaign to Deliver 20,000 Meals to People in Need this Christmas

For more than a decade, BioPak has forged a strong partnership with OzHarvest, offering unwavering support for their food rescue and food waste education initiatives. BioPak has actively participated in various remarkable activities hosted by OzHarvest, ranging from CEO cookoffs to zero-waste breakfasts. These engagements have played a vital role in raising awareness about the persistent problem of food waste and food scarcity and their far-reaching consequences on the environment, society, and the economy.

OzHarvest's mission involves rescuing food that would otherwise be discarded and transforming it into nourishing meals for those in need. To accomplish this vital work, OzHarvest naturally requires sturdy and eco-conscious packaging, perfectly aligning with our commitment as their charity partner.

A Cup of Compassion

The holiday season is a time for joy and celebration, but it can be a period of hardship and uncertainty for many families and individuals. In Australia, over 3.7 million households have experienced severe food insecurity in the last year, making it more crucial than ever to come together and help those in need. In the spirit of giving, BioPak and OzHarvest have launched a heartwarming Christmas cup campaign with a mission to deliver 20,000 meals to those who need it most.

The centrepiece of this remarkable campaign is the limited edition compostable Christmas cup, which will be available at participating cafes and businesses across Australia. These cups bear a QR code, offering a simple yet powerful way for coffee lovers and generous souls to make a difference. With a donation of as little as 50 cents, they can help provide a meal to someone in need. BioPak will also donate 5 per cent of cup sales to OzHarvest.

The Hunger Report

Recent data from the FoodBank Hunger Report reveals a concerning reality - 36% of Australian households have faced severe food insecurity in the past year. Factors such as the rising cost of living, soaring interest rates, and the devastating impact of natural disasters have compounded the struggles faced by many families and individuals. In the face of such challenges, the BioPak and OzHarvest Christmas campaign takes on a special significance.

The Power of a Meaningful Partnership

BioPak CEO Gary Smith underscores the importance of OzHarvest's role in assisting vulnerable communities. He says, "We are incredibly proud to continue our ongoing partnership and work with OzHarvest. While Christmas is often a joyful occasion, we acknowledge that this time of the year can be incredibly hard for many families and individuals in our community. We hope to achieve our goal of delivering 20,000 meals to people this holiday season and help OzHarvest continue to make a positive impact, both for our planet and for those in need."

OzHarvest Founder & CEO, Ronni Kahn AO said the latest figures reveal the shocking reality of food insecurity in Australia. “In our so called ‘lucky’ country it’s devasting to think that food is often crossed off the list of things families can afford. We see the need in the communities every day and are doing our best to make sure good food gets to those who need it most, but often there’s just not enough. The simple act of buying your coffee in BioPak cup will help us feed more people in need this Christmas.”

A Goal Worth Achieving

The campaign's primary aim is to raise $10,000, which will result in 20,000 meals served to thousands of families across Australia. You can nourish ten people in need with a $5 donation (the cost of a coffee cup).

Participating in this mission is simple and meaningful. Here's how you can join in:

  1. Find the OzHarvest Christmas Cup at your local cafe.
  2. Scan the QR code on the cup.
  3. Make a donation.
  4. Share the cause with friends and family to help reach the goal of 20,000 meals for those in need this holiday season.
  5. If you're looking for a more direct way to make a difference, you can donate right now by visiting the OzHarvest fundraising webpage. You can also print this flyer and share it in your office and with your local cafe.

Your contribution is more than just a meal; it's a compassionate gesture, a promise of hope, and a building block for a brighter future. By coming together and supporting the BioPak and OzHarvest Christmas Cup campaign, we can profoundly impact the lives of those less fortunate. This holiday season, let's give the gift of nourishment and hope, and show that compassion and unity can truly make a difference.

About The Christmas Cups

The Design

Our Christmas BioCup evokes the warm and fuzzy feeling of Christmas while alluding to the age-old saying that ‘Christmas is about giving, not receiving’. Our cups feature Australian animals dressed in festive attire and a prominent yellow panel with the recognisable OzHarvest logo. The message reads, “For the cost of a coffee, you can feed people in need”. The cup explains that you can scan the QR code to donate to those who need it the most. After a few years of scanning QR codes during the pandemic, QR codes were deemed an easy way to elicit a call to action. This QR code takes you directly to the OzHarvest website with a few different amounts you can select to donate. The thought is that if you have enough disposable income to buy yourself a coffee, then you most likely have some extra funds to support someone in need at Christmas. The purpose of these decorations is to draw attention to the charity and elicit a call to action.

Industrially Compostable

Like all of our cups, these limited edition holiday cups we made with our premium paperboard and lined with Ingeo™ – a bioplastic made from plants, not oil. These renewable plant materials mean that they can be industrially composted and turned into rich composting soil to help grow more plants. They are certified industrially compostable to Australian (AS4736) standards and can be disposed of in some FOGO bins, or check the Compost Connect website to see which cafes are composting our packaging.
