BioPak Commits to Reaching Net-Zero GHG Emissions Across Our Value Chain by 2050

BioPak commits to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, showcasing its dedication to sustainable practices

The latest climate science warns that dramatic action is needed to curb temperature rise and avoid catastrophic impacts. At BioPak, the fight against climate change is not just a responsibility, it’s a priority.

BioPak is proud to align with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-approved target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This target reflects our commitment to ambitious emissions reductions in line with the latest climate science.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.

What Net-Zero Means for BioPak

Net-zero isn’t just about offsetting emissions, it’s about reducing them to near zero. This involves cutting GHG emissions in absolute terms across our operations, products, and supply chain. It also requires us to neutralise any residual emissions by removing the equivalent amount of GHGs from the atmosphere through initiatives like reforestation and carbon capture.

BioPak is aligned with the following approved near and long-term science-based emissions reduction targets approved* by SBTi:

Near-Term Targets

  • reduce absolute scope 1 and 2** GHG emissions by 57.1% by 2030 from a 2019 base year.
  • reduce absolute scope 3*** GHG emissions by 46.2% within the same timeframe.

Long-Term Targets

  • reduce absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions by 90% by 2050 from a 2019 base year

**Scope 1 and 2 emissions are emissions from the Group's own operations and the energy it uses. We aim to reduce these emissions by 57.1% from 2019 levels.

***Scope 3 emissions are emissions from the Group's value chain (upstream and downstream supply chain) and the use of its products. We aim to reduce these emissions by 46.2% from 2019 levels.

Measuring and Reporting Our Progress

Understanding and managing our carbon footprint is key to our success. With the help of independent third parties, we measure emissions across every stage of our value chain from raw material extraction to product disposal. These insights guide our business operations and mitigation strategies, and our progress can be found in our annual Sustainability Report.

What Are ‘Science-Based Targets’ and Who Is Eligible?

Science-based targets provide a clear and defined pathway for companies to reduce GHG emissions, helping to slow down climate change. These targets are considered "science-based" when they align with the latest climate science and the goals of the Paris Agreement—specifically, limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

What Are the Benefits of Setting Science-Based Targets?

Aligning GHG emissions reduction with climate science benefits both the planet and businesses. Setting science-based targets offers a strategic advantage, helping companies future-proof their growth, cut costs, adapt to regulations, boost investor confidence, and drive innovation, all while showcasing tangible sustainability commitments to environmentally conscious consumers.

The SBTi provides detailed feedback and expert support throughout the target validation process, ensuring companies meet rigorous standards. Signing the SBTi commitment letter also earns immediate recognition as a “Committed” company on platforms like the SBTi, CDP, UN Global Compact, and We Mean Business websites, reinforcing credibility and commitment to climate action.

Who Is the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)?

SBTi’s vision is a net-zero, equitable economy that operates within the planet’s limits. Guided by values of accountability, integrity, respect, and collaboration, the SBTi drives corporate climate action globally by enabling businesses to set science-based targets for reducing GHG emissions. Supported by partners like CDP, the UN Global Compact, and WWF, the SBTi establishes standards, offers tools and guidance, and validates targets to ensure alignment with the latest climate science.

With the urgent need to limit global warming to 1.5°C, the SBTi emphasises that halving GHG emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero by 2050 are essential goals. Recognising the critical role of businesses, the SBTi empowers companies to decarbonise effectively and inspires action across industries, supply chains, and governments, driving the global transition to a sustainable future.

Why This Matters for BioPak

The stakes couldn’t be higher. For BioPak, net-zero is about leadership, innovation, and collaboration. By committing to science-based targets, we’re demonstrating that ambitious climate action can go hand in hand with business success. Together, we’re proving that a sustainable future isn’t just possible, it’s achievable.

We won’t achieve our targets alone though, and need our entire value chain to join us on this journey. We strongly encourage all businesses we work with to start understanding your emissions as it is the first step to reducing them.
