On 12 November 2020, the Morrison Government has announced grants totalling $10.5 million, funding 15 waste recovery projects from 11 organisations through the National Product Stewardship Investment Fund, including BioPak’s composting initiative that will see organic waste (compostable packaging and food waste) being turned into healthy soil.

Assistant Minister for Waste Reduction and Environmental Management, Trevor Evans MP, said that we are shifting the dial in Australia as we change our mindset to thinking about waste as a resource and move towards a more circular economy. “BioPak’s new product stewardship scheme for organic waste and compostable packaging will reduce waste going to landfill, lift recycling rates and help food service businesses and consumers make a practical, positive difference for the environment”.

BioPak will be joining forces with a host of partners in the foodservice and waste sectors to use this funding to grow the Australian composting network and instigate wide spread change.

"It is time to join together and make compostable materials a reliable, dependable, cost-efficient and preferred material choice in applications where they facilitate the diversion of organic waste from landfill with supporting programs and infrastructure in place to ensure positive outcomes. Only collaboration can transform compostable materials from a niche initiative to a core pillar of a circular and sustainable economy", says Richard Fine, Founder of BioPak.

Eight percent of greenhouse gases heating the planet are caused by food waste. The foodservice industry in Australia contributes nearly 900,000 tonnes of organic waste, including an estimated 17 billion individual single-use foodservice disposables which could all be recovered and diverted from landfills through composting.

BioPak launched a compost collection service to its customers in 2018, this new initiative will transform the service into an industry-led program where foodservice businesses can collectively support the growth of composting in Australia.
