WHY WE LOVE FSC™ PAPER AND BIRCHWOOD

A Responsible Way To Create Paper and Wood Packaging

Ever wondered what the story is behind our wooden cutlery and paper-based packaging?

An FSC™ certification makes sure our wood is sourced from responsibly managed forests – taking into account sustainability measures like water use, energy use, community support and the end product’s overall environmental rating.

FSC™ has had a profound impact on the logging industry both in Australia and around the world

FSC™ also works to address the ecological, social and cultural needs of indigenous communities and workers

FSC™ Paper and Wood Benefits:
Here’s Why We Love It

The Forest Stewardship Council™ (licence code FSC™: C110879)  a non-profit organisation that acts to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC™ certified paper and birchwood represent an exciting opportunity to move away from forest management practices that aren’t up to scratch, and move toward higher standards across the globe.

.FSC™ paper and wood comes from responsibly-managed plantations that better preserve natural diversity and ecosystems.

An FSC™ certification benefits the lives of local people and workers, all while ensuring it remains economically viable (source).

An FSC™ certification puts the power to the consumer. They can feel confident the products they’re buying come from a responsible source.

FSC™ eliminates deforestation, forest degradation and illegal logging by exposing practices that aren’t up to scratch.

A responsible alternative to plastic. FSC™ paper and wood packaging reduce the use of conventional plastic packaging, and move toward paper and wood packaging that’s suitable for home and industrial composting.

Get To Know FSC™ Paper

What is FSC™ paper and wood?

Both wood and paper can be certified to FSC™ standards. Our wooden cutlery is made from FSC™ certified birchwood (licence code FSC™ C110879).

An FSC™ certification ensures the wood is sourced from forests that are responsibly managed in the most environmentally sustainable way possible, including water and energy use, as well as the end product’s overall environmental rating.

What does FSC™ mix paper or FSC™ mix wood mean?

When you see the FSC™ mix label, it means the product is made from a mixture of materials from FSC™ certified forests, recycled materials, and/or FSC™ controlled wood. This still mitigates the risk of the wood coming from an unacceptable plantation.

What is 100% FSC™ certified wood?

When you see the FSC™ 100% label, it means the product is made up entirely of wood from responsibly managed FSC™ certified forests.

Is FSC™ paper recyclable and compostable?

Our un-lined paper is suitable for home composting and suitable for paper recycling if not contaminated with food. Our lined paper products are certified industrial compostable but not recyclable. Check with your local council for area-specific details.

Is FSC™ wooden cutlery recyclable and compostable?

Our FSC™ wooden cutlery can’t be recycled. However, since it’s 100% wood it can be treated like garden waste and placed in your home compost.

What is the carbon footprint of BioPak’s wooden cutlery?

Our wooden cutlery releases no carbon for us to offset. That’s because the trees sequester carbon while they grow – and the majority of this remains in the product even after you’ve finished using it. This is enough to offset the emissions released from manufacturing, transportation and disposal in landfill.

Better yet, if our cutlery ends up in compost, the environmental outcome is even better as more carbon will be stored in compost and soil.

Beware of Greenwashing

Unfortunately, greenwashing is rife in the sustainable packaging industry. Vague claims like “materials sourced from sustainable forests” can be used without adhering to strict FSC certifications. Every link of the supply chain should be certified to FSC or PEFC.

Brands may also claim their products are from an FSC certified factory. But if they don’t have the certificate themselves, it can’t be verified. Perhaps worst of all, a business might create their own “stamp” misleading consumers into thinking their product is certified to some official standard. Always look for the FSC logo on the packaging and the corresponding certificate code (ours is SCS-COC-004187). The three different logos look like this:

The FSC™ 100 logo – the mark of responsible forestry. The FSC™ 100 logo – the mark of responsible forestry.

You’ll see this logo when all materials come from responsibly managed FSC™ certified forests.

The FSC™ recycled logo – the mark of responsible forestry. The FSC™ recycled logo – the mark of responsible forestry.

You’ll see this logo when the product is made from 100% recycled materials — reducing the need to cut down more trees.

The FSC™ mix logo – the mark of responsible forestry. The FSC™ mix logo – the mark of responsible forestry.

You’ll see this logo when the product is made from a mixture of materials from FSC™ certified forests, recycled materials and/or FSC-controlled wood.
