MCDONALDS: Swaps to Paper Straws

MCDONALDS: Swaps to Paper Straws

McDonald’s is an iconic fast food chain loved all around the world for their affordable burgers, chips, milkshakes, happy meals and more. Like any other large food producer, McDonald’s is aware of the impact of their business on the planet and are putting steps in place to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. We know that just by switching to our BioStraws made from FSC™ certified paper, McDonald’s can make a huge difference and set a positive example for other quick service restaurants.

McDonald’s Japan

McDonald’s menus vary country to country. In Japan, the drink menu includes delicious smoothies, frappes and your regular fountain soda. Millions of drinks are served per day at McDonald’s around the world. In Japan, drinks are now served with our 4-ply premium grade FSC™ Mix (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper spoon straws. These paper straws are designed to last while you sip your delicious drinks and not get soggy like some other paper straws. It’s important to remember that not all paper straws on the market are created equal – some are lined with plastic which would make them no better than a conventional plastic straw, destined for landfill. Our BioStraws are certified home compostable to NF T51-800 European standards. Paper packaging that does not contain any lining or additives is naturally biodegradable in a home or industrial composting environment.

Winner of McDonald’s Japan Supplier Summit 2022

On Dec 1st, 2022, BioPak was awarded the ‘Giving Back to the Community (Sustainability)’ Award at McDonald's Japan Supplier Summit 2022.

While there have been a lot of challenges to overcome with introducing paper straws into food service, BioPak’s was given this award for successfully implementing sturdy BioStraws into McDonald’s Japan stores.

McDonald’s New Zealand

McDonald’s stores in New Zealand have also made the conscious decision to move away from single-use plastic straws in favour of BioPak regular certified home compostable BioStraws and FSC™ certified premium-grade 4-ply scoop BioStraws.

McDonald’s Hobart

BioPak was delighted to be approached by McDonald’s in Hobart back in 2021, Tasmania to help their stores transition away from plastic packaging ahead of Australia’s single-use plastic bans. This forward thinking city was the first in Australia to ban single-use plastic takeaway food packaging as part of a wider move to become single-use plastic free. McDonald’s moved ahead of the single-use plastic legislation and teamed up with BioPak to convert all three of their Hobart stores to plastic-free packaging replacing all plastic items with compostable plant-based alternatives.

As a result of this partnership, BioPak received the great honor in being awarded as ‘McDonald’s Valued Supplier’ in 2021. This prestigious award reflected the hard work and dedication of our team members in helping McDonalds to become completely plastic-free.

Whether you are a large or small QSR, BioPak can help you transition away from single-use plastic items and help you start making a positive impact. Whether you’re looking for generic packaging items or custom, our team is ready to help.
