Aqueous BioCups Winner of the Packaging Materials and Components Category

BioPak is excited to announce that we have won the 2024 WorldStar Packaging Award for the Packaging Materials and Components for our Aqueous BioCups.

Aqueous BioCups are made with FSC™ certified paper – paper sourced from responsibly managed plantations and not from old-growth forests. These cups are lined with Aqueous technology – a unique waterproof barrier coating that is certified home compostable to Australian (AS5810) and European (NF-T51-800) standards.

“At BioPak, we create sustainable, innovative packaging solutions designed for the circular economy. It is both humbling and encouraging to be acknowledged by the World Packaging Organisation and Worldstar Packaging Awards, the most prestigious global packaging accolade. This recognition drives us to continually think outside the box and bring innovative solutions to market” says Gary Smith, CEO BioPak.

“WorldStar echoes the importance of packaging innovation on a global level, fostering science, technology and innovation, recognizing and encouraging packaging professionals to go beyond”, says Soha Atallah, WPO Vice President Events and WorldStar Coordinator.

A Home Compostable Solution

Aqueous home compostable BioCups offer consumers a game-changing alternative. When paired with our certified home compostable sugarcane lids, businesses and consumers now have a completely home compostable takeaway cup solution. They no longer need to rely on their local council to not only provide Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bins but also accept certified compostable packaging in them. They can simply toss their Aqueous BioCup and plant fibre lid into their home compost bin, giving them control over sustainable disposal of the cup. It's a small but impactful step towards the circular economy.

For foodservice businesses who are looking to manage their organic and packaging waste sustainably we launched Compost Connect. This not-for-profit platform connects their premises to commercial organic waste pick-up services, diverting food waste from landfill. With compost partners across Australia, New Zealand and the UK, businesses can search their postcode to find out if commercial organics collection is available in their area.

Why Composting?

Why do we believe that composting food packaging is the best end-of-life solution? It’s quite simple. Composting diverts food waste from landfill and turns it into valuable, nutrient-rich compost instead. Composting can:

  • Enrich soil – promote healthy soils that need less water, fertiliser and pesticides.
  • Nurture plants – encourage plants to thrive, improve agricultural yields and aid reforestation.
  • Combat climate change – lower greenhouse gas emissions associated with sending organic waste to landfill, while also sequestering carbon and returning nutrients to soil.
