Coca Cola Amatil announced that they are entering the paper straw market this year in a move to reduce plastic consumption. The beverage manufacturer, who would previously distribute free plastic straws to over 115,000 outlets for promotional events in Australia, is now planning to make all their packaging fully recyclable by 2025. Part of the plan is to phase out all plastic straws and replace them with recyclable, home compostable and The Forest Stewardship Council™ (License code FSC™ C110879) certified BioPak paper straws.
Group managing director Alison Watkins said the company is highly committed to reducing any unnecessary plastic packaging. This decision is the first move in the company’s sustainability efforts.
BioStraws are made from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper sourced from managed plantations. Whilst paper straws are significantly better than plastic, it's important to know that not all paper straws are created equal. FSC Chain of Custody certification guarantees that the paper used to produce our straws come from a forest and supply chain that is managed responsibly throughout.
Paper straws are the most sustainable option, as they will biodegrade quicker in a natural environment. In seawater, they will "untwirl" relatively quickly, greatly limiting the risk of harming marine life. Even though using paper straws is a step in the right direction, we encourage customers to adopt a ‘use less’ mentality.
