CHARGRILL CHARLIE'S Champions Composting

At Chargrill Charlie's, sustainability is top of mind and they are always looking for ways to improve and reduce their carbon footprint.

The Partner

Chargrill Charlies is a family business focused on making fresh food and salads since 1989. Their ethos is “Eat well, not dull. Support local. Act sustainably”. They have 17 stores in Sydney and 2 in Melbourne and growing.

The Problem

The foodservice industry sends about 1,000,000 tonnes of organic waste to landfill every year (source). Chargrill Charlie's approached BioPak to help them divert their take away packaging from landfill to avoid contributing to this alarming statistic.

The Solution

Chargrill Charlie’s wanted a range of branded compostable packaging that is not only better for the environment, but also performs to the same, if not better standards than the plastic alternatives. So, Chargrill Charlie’s approached BioPak, the leader in sustainable foodservice packaging, to help them develop a range of solutions that functionally work as well as the plastic options. No one wants to come home with cold, or even worse, spoiled food!

The new packaging developed for Chargrill Charlies is certified carbon neutral and responsibly sourced from rapidly renewable, plant-based materials like sugarcane pulp, a by-product of the sugar refining process that would otherwise be burnt.

Working with BioPak, Chargrill Charlies have switched 80% of their packaging to either home compostable or industrially compostable materials. BioPak and Chargrill Charlie's are still working closely together to develop new compostable packaging to replace the rest.

Home Compostable

  • Sugarcane pulp compartment dinner boxes
  • FSC™ BioBoard burger boxes and trays
  • FSC™ certified paper bags
  • PLA bioplastic home compostable bags
  • Bamboo skewers
  • Paper straws

Industrially Compostable

  • PLA bioplastic cutlery packs
  • PLA bioplastic Cold Cups and Dessert Bowls
  • PLA bioplastic lids

BioBoard products are certified carbon neutral and made from FSC™ certified paper, ensuring that they are manufactured from materials sourced from sustainably-managed forests. Our unlined paper boxes and trays are home compostable whereas our lined BioBoard is industrially compostable and even recyclable in kerbside recycling if not soiled with food.

Bioplastics are a large family of different materials. A plastic material is defined as a bioplastic if it is either biobased, biodegradable, or features both properties. The bioplastic we use in BioPak packaging is certified compostable to AS4736 or EN13432, the Australian and European industrial compostability standards. This means it will completely break down in a compost environment within a defined timeframe and leave behind no toxic residues.
