The Challenge: Sustainable Development in the Catering Industry

Unfortunately, the catering industry places a significant burden on the environment due to factors like food waste, single-use packaging waste, energy consumption, and the sourcing of ingredients.

Shiok Kitchen is working to become carbon neutral and embrace sustainability through environmental responsibility, social responsibility, sustainable sourcing, continuous improvement, and education and awareness (source).

The Solution: Positive Sustainability Steps

Shiok Kitchen is taking several steps toward sustainable development and ESG goals, which include adopting BioPak’s compostable packaging.

• Low carbon

Creative Eateries Group has been awarded with a carbon neutral certification.

Falling under Creative Eateries, Shiok Kitchen Catering is working towards being awarded with government endorsed markers, like the Low Carbon SG mark and Singapore MICE Sustainability Certification (MSC).

• Sustainable food and ingredients

Shiok Kitchen carefully sources their ingredients. Their Farm-To-Table recognised – meaning at least 15% of their menus are locally sourced. This reduces carbon emissions associated with travel, while also ensuring freshness.

Shiok Kitchen uses locally farmed eggs, locally sourced seafood, and reduces methane emissions associated with rearing beef and pork by having menus with only seafood, chicken and “zero meat” options.

• Food donation

Untouched food that’s considered safe to consume is donated to Food Rescue, which helps feed those in need and reduces food waste.

• Compostable Foodservice Packaging

Shiok Kitchen has partnered with BioPak for foodservice packaging. Rather than using traditional plastic packaging, they’ve opted for products made from rapidly renewable plant-fibre, made from sugarcane pulp. Our plant fibre range is food safe (BRC and HACCP), quality certified (ISO9001), Environmental production certified (ISO 14001), and holds a Corporate social accreditation (BSCI).

At BioPak, we’re working hard to remove added PFAS from our entire plant fibre range in 2024 – making us one of the first in our industry. By removing added PFAS, our plant fibre range will be certified industrially compostable (AS4736 and EN13432). This means companies, like Shiok Kitchen, can send their compostable packaging and food waste to commercial compost facilities or units and close the loop on waste.
