At BioPak, we see composting as the best end-of-life solution for food waste and compostable foodservice packaging, now and in the future. But to fully realise the benefits of compostable packaging, correct disposal – in a compost facility and not landfill – is essential.

That’s why we launched Compost Connect, a not-for-profit composting platform connecting foodservice businesses to compost solutions. While there’s limited access to large-scale composting facilities in Singapore, Compost Connect acts as an educational platform, showing businesses and consumers innovative ways to compost at home and in your business.

Why Compost Connect?

  • If food waste were a country, it would be the third largest emitting country in the world after China and the USA.
  • In 2022, Singapore generated 813,000 tonnes of food waste (source).
  • Food waste in Singapore has grown by 20% in the last 10 years (source).

Launched by BioPak, Compost Connect, is a not-for-profit platform committed to education, connecting foodservice businesses to compost solutions, and lifting composting rates.

How To Compost Your Foodservice Packaging

Compostable packaging can be sent to an industrial compost facility or disposed of in your home compost, depending on where the packaging material is designed to go. See the compostable certification on each product to know the best method.

Industrial Compost Solutions

If your packaging is certified industrially compostable, it can be sent to a commercial compost facility. However, the composting infrastructure in Singapore is not fully developed.

Instead, businesses can install an on-site composting system to reduce the waste sent to landfill, like a system from Green Eco Technologies.

WasteMaster (by Green Eco Technologies) is an Australian-made and owned technology that converts organic waste into a concentrated residue within 24 hours. It’s been independently tested to show that it destroys all bacteria and pathogens with virtually no odour – it also doesn’t attract rodents. The residue can be safely handled, transported, stored and used as an additive to create a high-quality compost.

When you sign up with Green Eco Technologies, you’ll get a custom dashboard showing how much waste you’ve diverted from landfill, your greenhouse gas reduction, how many homes you’ve powered and more.

Green Eco Technologies services Australia-wide, as well as New Zealand, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong and Singapore. The WaseMaster accepts up to 20% of feedstock waste in compostable packaging.

Why Install a Commercial Compost Machine?

Environmental Benefits

Food waste produces eight per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions (source). By having a commercial compost machine readily available on-site, you can easily reduce the amount of waste you send to landfill or incinerators, and as a result, your emissions.

Home Compost Solutions

If your packaging is certified home compostable, it can be thrown into your backyard compost! Along with home compostable packaging, you can throw things like food scraps, grass clippings and leaves and they’ll break down over several months, sometimes years.

Different home composting methods include:

Better for the Planet

Organic waste in landfill emits methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. By composting, you avoid these emissions and create nutrient-rich fertiliser instead.
