We are thrilled to announce that we have won the Singapore Packaging Star Award in the category of commercial environmental sustainable packaging award for our BioCane produce trays.
The Singapore Packaging Agreement (SPA)
The Singapore Packaging Agreement (SPA) was introduced in 2007 as a joint initiative by the government, industry and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The SPA aimed for more sustainable packaging waste management by encouraging companies to review their packaging designs and practices across the entire supply chain. By reducing packaging, signatories have been often able to also reduce costs and meet the growing demand for sustainable products by environmentally conscious consumers and corporate clients.
What are the Singapore Packaging Star Awards?
The Singapore Packaging Star Awards are an annual event to recognise those who have made notable achievements in reducing packaging waste. The awards are based on the consensus of a qualified panel of judges; which includes authorities from the technical, visual & commercial aspects of packaging. The award category that BioPak’s BioCane produce trays were entered into was Environmentally Sustainable Packaging Product. The criteria of this category is that the packaging is designed with special consideration for the environmental impacts of the package and product during its whole lifecycle – which is exactly how BioPak designs all packaging.
All BioPak packaging is designed with the planet in mind first. From materials to end-of-life disposal solutions, our team designs products with little to no impact on the environment – or finds a solution like composting to return the materials back to the earth and close the loop.
BioCane Produce Trays
Our BioCane produce trays were created to replace conventional plastic packaging often used by food producers for supermarkets to package things like fresh fruit, vegetables and confectionary items, meal kits and even fresh oysters. BioPak believed there was a better solution to package these items without using plastic made from fossil fuels while still protecting the food items during transportation. Sugarcane pulp, also known as ‘bagasse’ is a by-product of the sugar refining industry that is a renewable resource and can be easily moulded into different shapes. BioPak Produce Trays are available in six different sizes and custom shapes can be created to suit any packaging requirements and needs. These trays are manufactured in facilities certified to Food Safety and Environmental Standards, which are certifications that are essential when producing packaging for food.

Major Benefits
These bagasse trays have many benefits, one of the most important being that bagasse as a material has a low environmental footprint. They are perfect for packaging fresh food as they are sturdy, moisture repellent and are able to withstand the rigours of the cold-chain.
Certified Home And Industrially Compostable & Recyclable
Our plant fibre produce trays are certified home compostable to European (NF T51-800) and Australian (AS5810) Standards, as well as industrially compostable to European (EN13432) and Australian (AS4736) Standards and will break down within 30-90 days and create nutrient-rich soil. They are also suitable for kerbside recycling if not too contaminated with food residue. They do not contain any added PFAS – an additive used in packaging for greaseproofing.
Give back Fund
BioPak donates 5% of profits of sales from all of our products to positive change, including charities and conservation not-for-profits.
Impact Data
Big Australian supermarket chains like Woolworths and fresh food producers have made a big difference by choosing to use our BioCane Produce Trays to package bakery items, fresh fruit and vegetables. By switching to compostable BioPak sugarcane pulp our customers have:
- Reduced carbon emission by 60 tonnes
- Avoided the use of 167 tonnes of fossil-fuel based plastic
- Offered home composting as an end-of-life recycling solution

The Singapore Green Plan 2030
The Singapore Green Plan 2030, or the Green Plan, is a whole-of-nation movement to advance Singapore’s national agenda on sustainable development. The Green Plan charts ambitious and concrete targets over the next 10 years, strengthening Singapore’s commitments under the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and Paris Agreement, and positioning us to achieve our long-term net zero emissions aspiration as soon as viable. Climate change is a global challenge, and Singapore is taking firm actions to do their part to build a sustainable future.
One of the key targets for this plan is to reduce the waste sent to landfill by 30% by 2030. BioPak have the perfect solution with our compostable packaging made from plants. Food service packaging is often made from plastic that becomes too contaminated with food to be accepted in the recycling stream. Our solution is to make packaging made from plants that can be composted along with any food scraps or residue. We recognise that composting isn’t available everywhere, so we’ve made it our mission to help expand composting infrastructure in the countries that we operate in by creating a not-for-profit and brand agnostic composting initiative called Compost Connect. This initiative aims to connect food service businesses directly with industrial compost pick up services to reduce organic waste going to landfill that can be composted instead.
