Sustainability
at BioPak

2024

At BioPak, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, driving our vision of a world without waste. From day one, we’ve focused on advancing the circular economy and leading the charge in revolutionising the foodservice packaging industry as demand for compostable solutions continues to grow. Packaging is essential to daily life, ensuring food can be stored, transported and distributed safely, but we also recognise and accept the responsibility to actively minimise the waste it creates. Our commitment to composting plays a pivotal role in our mission, reducing waste and closing the loop by diverting packaging and food waste from landfill and turning it into valuable organic matter that enriches the soil. By championing compostable solutions, we’re not just changing the future of packaging, we’re enabling a more sustainable and circular world for generations to come.

Our Five Pillars Towards a Circular Economy

These five pillars are the foundation of our vision – a world without waste. We’re disrupting the take, make, waste model and leading the way towards a truly circular economy.

Use rapidly renewable, reclaimed, and plant-based raw materials

Reducing Our Environmental Impact

We are dedicated to reducing our impact on the environment by integrating innovative tools, forward-thinking business strategies, and globally verified sustainability programs. These initiatives align with our mission to create a world without waste, guided by our five key sustainability pillars.

Emission Reduction Plan

At BioPak, our commitment to combating climate change is steadfast. While we were carbon-neutral certified for over a decade, in 2022, we made a strategic shift away from traditional carbon offsetting. Instead of allocating 1% of profits to offsets, we redirect these funds into our Emission Reduction Plan, funding research, education, and advocacy to promote composting across our markets.

BioPak Commits to Reaching Net-Zero GHG Emissions Across Our Value Chain by 2050

BioPak’s net-zero science-based target by 2050 has been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), via our major shareholder, Duni. SBTi is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. They’re focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.

BioPak has the following approved near and long-term science-based emissions reduction targets with the SBTi:

Near-Term Targets

  • Reduce absolute scope 1 and 2* GHG emissions by 57.1% by 2030 from a 2019 base year.
  • Reduce absolute scope 3** GHG emissions by 46.2% within the same timeframe.

Long-Term Targets

  • Reduce absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions by 90% by 2050 from a 2019 base year

*Scope 1 and 2 emissions are emissions from BioPak's own operations and the energy it uses. BioPak aims to reduce these emissions by 57.1% from 2019 levels.
**Scope 3 emissions are emissions from BioPak's value chain (upstream and downstream supply chain) and the use of its products. BioPak aims to reduce these emissions by 46.2% from 2019 levels.

Environmental Impact Label

BioPak’s Environmental Impact Label sets a new standard for transparency, providing clear data on the environmental footprint of our products to empower smarter choices and drive sustainability. It’s a bold step in reducing our impact and combating climate change.

Compost Connect

To reduce the emissions associated with the end-of-life of our products, a key part of the Emission Reduction Plan fund is our investment in Compost Connect. Compost Connect is a not-for-profit composting platform committed to growing composting infrastructure and education, lifting composting rates, and connecting foodservice businesses to commercial composters. The platform works by empowering people to compost – both at an individual and business level.

Embracing Reusables for the Circular Economy

At BioPak, we’ve always held a vision of a circular economy, and now we recognise that the best way to embrace circularity in the foodservice industry is by adopting reusables and compostables, hand in hand. In 2024, we welcomed Huskee to BioPak Group. Original HuskeeCups are reusable, elegant and a passport to the ‘HuskeeSwap’ program – a cup exchange system designed to make reusables as easy as possible. Once they’ve reached end-of-life, Huskee products can be recycled via HuskeeLoop.

Advancing United Nations’ Sustainable Goals

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a universal framework for tackling global challenges like poverty, inequality, and climate change while promoting peace and prosperity by 2030. At BioPak, we align our operations with the SDGs, focusing on five key goals tied to our business pillars and two supporting goals linked to our charity partnerships. Throughout this report, we highlight the SDG logos in relevant sections to underscore our commitment to driving progress toward a circular economy and advancing these critical global objectives.

It is important to note that these forward-looking statements carry inherent risks and uncertainties. The actual results may deviate from the envisaged outcomes due to various factors, including but not limited to the actions of our suppliers and business partners, the market appetite for certain materials and the availability of end-of-life options. In addition, BioPak relies, either wholly or partially, on publicly available information and data provided by our suppliers and business partners.  Further, our ability to verify such information (whether now, in the past, or in the future) may be limited by the integrity of the underlying data available at the relevant point in time and the status and evolution of global, supranational and national laws, guidelines and regulations in relation to the tracking and provision of such data.
