Wilsons Pet Food is a historic, British brand that craft premium, quality food that is truly good for dogs. They are one of the longest established pet food companies in the UK, and are champions of compostable packaging.
We chatted to Wilsons Pet Food to learn about how BioPak has helped them on their compostable packaging journey.
Who are you and what do you guys do?
Wilsons Pet Food are a historic brand who've been producing pet food in Scotland for over 160 years. We currently produce 100% natural cold pressed and raw frozen dog food in premium and working dog varieties, using only the best ingredients.
When did you start using compostable packaging, and what sparked this decision?
In the pet food industry, most food comes in plastic packaging and although this can be recycled, it can become a problem when you drill down by areas across the UK as each county has different recycling facilities. Along with the fact that our customers are becoming more conscious of their carbon footprint, we went on a mission in 2020 to find a way to reduce the plastic we use in our packaging.
Where did you hear about us at BioPak?
A lot of research but in the end I managed to find the product on Google, however it wasn't being used for the application we use today.
What makes our products a good fit for your business?
The fact that BioPak is made using sustainable materials and their products are not only biodegradable but also compostable makes them a great fit! It is also a great size meaning we can get a good amount of food in the trays without compromising on the stability of the tray.
If you had to choose one, what’s your favourite product of ours and why?
We absolutely love the BioPak trays which we use to package our raw frozen dog food in. As the name suggests, we require the packaging to be hardy and withstand freezing temperatures and this certainly does the job. Paired with the fact that it stacks perfectly in not on our stockists' shelves but our end customers' freezers.

Do you find that your customers are interested in hearing about your packaging, where it’s come from and the benefits it has on the environment?
We have noticed that our customers are becoming more and more aware of their impact on the environment and we've had a lot of positive comments on our new compostable packaging. They are pleased that now they don't have to make the decision between being eco-friendly and choosing good quality dog food.
Are there any tips you could give companies that perhaps haven’t made the switch to plastic-free products, or maybe are thinking about it but aren’t sure where to start?
It can definitely be a big step to make the decision to walk away from plastic, but making the first step in looking, and certainly finding BioPak, is the best place to start. Consumers are now becoming more aware of their carbon footprint and this shows with the way they are choosing to shop.
