Sustainability can be defined as meeting our current needs without compromising the needs of future generations – and this can apply to social, environmental and economic factors. So, what does sustainability look like at BioPak?
At BioPak, our vision is a world without waste. We’re disrupting the take, make, waste model and leading the way towards a truly circular economy. How? By closing the loop with compostable foodservice packaging and encouraging the growth of local industrial composting infrastructure.
Compostable Materials
The raw materials choice is a critical part of the circular economy – that’s why we choose rapidly renewable, reclaimed, plant-based materials as alternatives to traditional plastic. We also invest in innovation and customisation technology to expand and improve our packaging range in the future. Our products are designed to be composted, either at home or in an industrial facility, at the end of their useful life. This works to divert food waste from landfill (a significant contributor to methane emissions and climate change) and create a nutrient-rich resource instead – compost!

Circular Solutions
Extended Producer Responsibility is an essential part of a global shift towards a circular economy. At BioPak, we’re working hard to encourage the correct disposal of our products– in a compost facility and not landfill. We’ve been working with the government, our customers and the waste industry to drive change. In 2021, we launched Compost Connect – a not-for-profit platform committed to education, lifting composting rates, and connecting foodservice businesses to commercial organic waste pick-up services. We also launched our new Emission Reduction Plan that will fund research, education and advocacy projects to grow the availability of composting as an end-of-life option in the markets we operate in.

Responsible Sourcing
BioPak products hold many certifications to ensure our products are made with people and the planet in mind first. Our certifications hold our manufacturers accountable and set a standard in the packaging industry to make sure people are treated and paid fairly, our products are safe for consumers, and our planet is protected, (or even benefits) from our product stewardship activities.

We’ve also planted 204,390 trees, donated 560,465 meals, and impacted 350,000 lives through repurposing medical supplies.

Accurate Data and Reporting
At BioPak, we recognise that the first step to reducing our impact is understanding where our impact is coming from in the first place. By partnering with Pickler, an environmental impact calculation software, we have clear and accurate data on the environmental impact of BioPak products throughout all lifecycle stages – including materials, production, transport and end-of-life. We use this data to make evidence-based decisions, build credibility, combat greenwashing and contribute to our annual greenhouse gas reporting. We also update our annual Emission Reduction Plan to report on our progress.
