After a short useful life of approximately 20 minutes, these cups usually end up in a landfill, where it takes hundreds of years to break down. The claims that a special additive can help conventional plastic 'biodegrade' are unsubstantiated and do not carry independent certification. On the contrary, research shows that these plastics fragment into small pieces but do not disappear. In addition, using (biodegradable plastic) doesn’t solve the issue of using fossil fuel resources.

Certified industrially compostable cups are designed for a circular economy. Rather than being destined for landfill, they can be sent to an industrial compost facility to break down.
