FAQ

  • What is the BioPak Give Back Fund?

BioPak gives back 7.5% of profits to positive change, so when you choose BioPak products you're contributing to important social and environmental initiatives. As a responsible business, we believe we have an obligation to preserve and protect the environment and to give back and support the communities in which we operate.

    Rainforest Rescue and GreenFleet

We donate 1% of Australian profits to Rainforest Rescue and 1% of New Zealand profits to GreenFleet. Since 2012, this pledge has funded the planting of over 20,000 trees and purchased 5 hectares of rainforest for protection.

    Carbon Neutral

We spend 2.5% of profits offsetting all carbon emissions associated with the production, transport and disposal of our products. All BioPak products are certified carbon neutral. The carbon emissions are calculated by the Carbon Reduction Institute and offset through the purchase of carbon credits. Since 2010, BioPak customers have offset 99,773 tons of CO2 emissions. That's equivalent to saving 41,855,817 litres of fuel, driving 398,626,828 km or removing 27,635 cars from the road.

    Charities and Organisations

We donate 4% of profits to support the charitable community work of many of our hospitality customers, particularly those working with the homeless and disadvantaged. We are a key partner to STREAT who empower young homeless people to find their feet through employment in the hospitality industry. We support a number of projects from fantastic charities like Rosies ‘Cuppa’ program, OzHarvest, Food Bank and Christ Mission Possible. 2% of sales of our Indigenous BioCups also goes directly to CorporateConnect.AB to support Indigenous communities.

  • Can I put BioPak products in my residential FOGO bin?

The BioPak home compostable ranges are usually fine to be placed in the FOGO bins, however, each local council has its own requirements so you need to contact your council directly for confirmation.

BioPak PLA products are accepted in residential FOGO in Hobart, SA and some parts of WA.

  • I use BioPak for takeaway products – will customers really bring the packaging back for composting?

Many BioPak Compost Club members report that their customers love the initiative and do bring their cups and packaging back for composting. We encourage cafes to offer a loyalty card scheme, where each BioPak product returned for composting earns a stamp towards a free hot drink or treat.

  • What is the BioPak Compost Service?

In 2018, BioPak launched the BioPak Compost Service in Australia and New Zealand. The BioPak Compost Service is designed to close the loop on compostable food packaging and divert organic waste from landfill. BioPak has partnered with 15 commercial composting facilities around Australia and New Zealand. The BioPak Compost Service connects BioPak customers with the organics recycling facility in their area to help businesses reduce their environmental impact and operate more sustainably.

BioPak supports the adoption of reusables wherever possible, but there are circumstances where reusables are not viable.

Where single-use foodservice packaging is the only viable option, using compostable packaging and implementing an organics waste stream is the most sustainable choice. In the foodservice, industry packaging is often soiled with food residue. This is seen as contamination by the recycling industry, meaning that even if the packaging is technically recyclable, it will actually end up in a landfill.

Composting is a circular economy solution that processes food waste and compostable packaging in the same waste stream. This allows businesses to reduce their environmental impact by diverting waste from landfill and instead of having it turned into nutrient-rich compost.

    Benefits of composting:

    • Composting helps fight climate change by sequestering carbon into the soil and avoiding methane emissions from landfill
    • Compost is nutrient-rich, allowing farmers to grow more food locally without the use of chemical fertilisers
    • Compost is an amazing soil conditioner that helps retain moisture and fight droughts.
  • Where does the BioPak Compost Service operate and what are the compost service fees?

The BioPak Compost Service is in the 15 cities listed below, covering over 2200 suburbs. Pricing varies by location, see relevant information for each city.

Not in the zone yet? Send us a message at compost@biopak.com or fill out the form on our BioPak Compost Service page and we will get in touch soon as we have arrived in your region.

  • How do I join the BioPak Compost Service?

Joining the BioPak Compost Service is easy. Signing up takes less than five minutes.

    1. Check if you're in the eligible collection zone. Check the suburb lists for your city.
    2. Complete the application form for your city.
    3. Email the completed form to compost@biopak.com
  • What are the BioPak Compost Service billing terms?

You will be billed by our Compost Partners directly. BioPak does not profit from this service and simply connects customers with the Compost Partner available in their area.

  • What is BioPak doing to support the growth in composting infrastructure?

The organic recycling industry is rapidly evolving. The BioPak Compost Service facilitates customers to connect with existing commercial composting infrastructure. We also support the growth of new infrastructure by driving demand for a thriving composting industry to assist in making new investment viable. We are also engaged with councils, waste collection contractors and composters to increase education and awareness for composting and reduce contamination across all waste streams.

  • If I can’t compost my BioPak products, are they still better for the environment than conventional packaging?

Yes! All BioPak products are made from rapidly renewable plant materials, not oil, and are certified carbon neutral. Carbon neutral means that the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production, transport and disposal of our products have been calculated and offset by investing in infrastructure and activities that offset carbon emissions.

  • Can I join the service if I am not a BioPak customer?

Yes, you do not need to be a direct customer of BioPak but you need to be using packaging that is certified to AS4736 standards. Our compost partners only accept packaging that has been certified compostable to these standards. BioPak is the only food packaging company with foodservice ranges certified to the Australian certification AS4736 for commercial composting.

If you are a business or an organisation that doesn’t use foodservice single-use packaging, please email us at compost@biopak.com.
